Itchy skin has a number of different causes. It can be simply through dry, flaky skin or the intense irritation of eczema or contact dermatitis triggered by chemicals and allergens like pollen and dust mites, infectious diseases like chicken pox or insect bites etc. This sets off an’ itch-scratch cycle’ creating further skin damage and allowing bacteria to penetrate the skin’s natural barrier, thus generating further irritation, itching and possible infection. Keeping the skin clean and cool helps and certain herbs like St Johns Wort (hypericum perforatum) can reduce bacteria and inflammation thus allowing healing to take place, whilst chickweed herb (stellaria) is used traditionally to relieve itching and chamomile (camomilla recutita) for reducing inflammation.
